What is KeryFlex?
KeryFlex is a painless, in-office application that restores the appearance of an individual’s natural nails. This system allows for a certified foot care provider to remodel an individual’s damaged nails affected by fungus, defects or trauma. The composite resin creates a flexible, but durable, non-porous nail that allows the remaining natural nail to grow. The KeryFlex nail is an immediate cosmetic improvement providing a natural-looking nail.
How long does it take to apply KeryFlex?
On average, a foot care provider can complete the application of KeryFlex Bonding Agent, KeryFlex Resin, and KeryFlex Sealant, with UV light curing time included, in 15-30 minutes depending on the how many nails needs to be reconstructed.
After KeryFlex is applied, how soon must an individual return for another application?
The interval between applications will vary according to the individual, but in general, the time between applications is 6 to 8 weeks. Rarely, a KeryFlex nail may detach from the natural nail. This can occur with repeated trauma to the KeryFlex nail. For example, with long-distance running, when individual has a small natural nail segment or the nail edge has extended beyond the tip of the toe.
Can restoration be done on a toe with NO natural nail?
KeryFlex does not bind to skin, therefore, the presence of at least 15% of the natural nail is recommended.
How is a KeryFlex nail removed?
A KeryFlex nail becomes permanently bound to the natural nail. To remove the nail, a foot care provider can file the artificial nail utilizing an electric drill until it is no longer attached to the natural nail.
Have there been any reported allergies to KeryFlex ingredients?
In rare cases, allergies (redness, irritation) have been reported.
Who should not use KeryFlex?
KeryFlex is not for everyone. KeryFlex Nail Restoration should not be used on individuals with peripheral vascular disease, arterial insufficiency, peripheral neuropathy, suspicious pigmented lesions on the nail or in-grown toenails. It should be avoided in patients who are pregnant, nursing or known to be sensitive or allergic to any of its ingredients. Ask your foot care provider if the KeryFlex Nail Restoration is right for you.
Are there any other precautions individuals should be aware of prior to a KeryFlex procedure?
It is recommended that patients refrain from using any products including lotions on the natural nail 2 days prior to a KeryFlex procedure.
Is KeryFlex a cure for fungal nails?
No. KeryFlex is an aesthetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of toenails damaged by fungus and other nail disorders.
How does a KeryFlex nail differ from an acrylic nail?
Acrylic nails are rigid and do not bend with the natural movement of the toes. As a result, acrylic nails applied to the toenails can cause damage to the layer of tissue under the nail (nail bed). Acrylic nails are also applied using strong acids which irritate the nail bed and can further damage the existing nail.
KeryFlex is flexible, yet durable, and designed specifically for the toes. It’s free of harsh acids used in salon systems. Keryflex is non-porous and will not allow moisture to permeate and get between the natural and prosthetic nails. KeryFlex’s medical grade resin is impregnated with the hydroxypyridone antifungal ingredient Piroctone.
Can KeryFlex be trimmed by regular nail trimmers or do patients have to return to a foot care provider for professional trimming?
A KeryFlex nail should be filed with a nail file or emery board to maintain a normal length. It should NOT be cut or clipped.
Can nail polish be applied over a new KeryFlex nail?
Nail polish maybe applied immediately after the KeryFlex sealant is cured and the remaining dispersion film has been removed with alcohol.
Can KeryFlex be used in combination with topical antifungal treatments?
Yes. While KeryFlex is not a treatment for fungal nails, a topical antifungal may be applied around the cuticle area. A KeryFlex nail is non-porous and impermeable so application directly to the nail surface is not recommended. Application of any liquid products under the proximal tip should be avoided.
Can KeryFlex be used in combination with laser therapy?
Yes. A KeryFlex nail may be applied immediately AFTER laser therapy and in between treatments. It is NOT recommended to laser through a KeryFlex nail.
Will continued exposure to the sun wearing open toe shoes lighten or weaken a KeryFlex nail?
No. KeryFlex was formulated with ingredients to protect against potential sun damage and yellowing.
Are there any prohibitive footwear choices not recommended after applying KeryFlex?
Friction against shoes may cause a KeryFlex nail to chip, crack and reduce its overall integrity. Comfortable & properly fit shoes are recommended.
Can a KeryFlex nail lift or pop off?
If lifting of the KeryFlex nail is going occur, it will typically occur within the first 3 days after application. Lifting will occur and is to be expected when a very small nail natural segment is present.
